Dhulikhel: Nepal’s Historic Hilltop Town of Heritage, Culture and Scenic Beauty

Dhulikhel is one of the seven town popular as ‘Saatgau’ under Bhaktapur which was redeveloved during 12th century AD by Thakuri King Ananda Dev. Etymologically, ancient Newari term ‘dhali’ & ‘khya’ meaning curd & land respectively resemble Dhulikhel as the land of curd. Later the term developed as Dhalikhyal to Dhulikhyal & Dhulikhel. Similarly, Shikhalapur is the Sanskrit term used for Dhulikhel that was developed from Shikharpur & Shikharapur meaning the city at hilltop. Dhulikhel is the hill-top town nestled at an average altitude of 1500 m above mean sea level. The geographical variation stretches from 800m around altitude at Khadkulo Daha, Chankhubesi area to 1710 m altitude of Kabhrekot, Devithan. Hereby, Kuttal, Chankhubesi, Pathakdihi, Kalchhe and so on area have subtropical type of climate. Whereas Kabhrekot, Batase Danda, Chisapani Danda, Bhatte Danda, Phulbarikot, Faskot, Chhaleshwor Danda and most of the northern belt have cool temperate type of climate. Notably, the main settlement at the southern lap have warm temperate type of climate. Therefore, most of the time, Dhulikhel is cool even in the summer and quite warm in winter during day.
